Clarke La sentinella. Lo stesso scrittore ha poi a sua volta tratto dalla sceneggiatura un romanzo dal titolo omonimo e con la medesima trama.  Kubrick aveva contattato Clarke perché necessitava di un buon soggetto di fantascienza per un film di genere. In questo modo il romanzo e il film nacquero e crebbero insieme, realizzando una collaborazione tra media differenti assolutamente unica e originale, almeno per l'epoca in cui fu attuata.  Sotto questo e sotto altri aspetti 2001 è rimasto uno dei più famosi film di fantascienza. Oltre che per l'ottima sceneggiatura, recitazione e tecnica di ripresa, esso si è meritato l'ammirazione degli appassionati per la fedeltà con cui riproduce l'ambiente spaziale: tutti gli avvenimenti in ambienti senz'aria si svolgono in silenzio, l'astronave ha una gravità artificiale per rotazione che è correttamente rappresentata, i movimenti in assenza di gravità sono lenti come dovrebbero essere. Anche la scena in cui un astronauta rientra nell'astronave passando alcuni secondi in un ambiente di vuoto è stata approvata dagli esperti come veritiera[1]. Kubrick in questo modo ha dimostrato che è possibile fare un ottimo film di fantascienza rispettando la realtà e senza introdurre elementi artificiosi. Inizialmente offriva una barra di navigazione che guidava gli utenti di internet in base alle strutture del traffico della maggior parte degli utenti. Attualmente Alexa fornisce informazioni riguardanti i contenuti di ciascuno dei siti visitati: il proprietario, il numero di pagine componenti il sito, il numero di collegamenti che puntavano al sito, e la frequenza degli aggiornamenti. Inoltre fornisce web crawls allo Internet Archive. In collaborazione con l'Internet Archive, gli ingegneri informatici di Alexa hanno ideato lo Internet Archive's Wayback Machine.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Alexa classifica i siti basandosi sulle visite effettuate dagli utenti della Alexa Toolbar, per Internet Explorer, e dalle barre degli strumenti integrate in Mozilla e Netscape. La questione se la base di utenti di Alexa sia rappresentativa del comportamento degli utenti di internet è controversa.
